Echidnas are widespread throughout Australia but seem especially common in Tasmania, where some days I felt they were a dime a dozen. I came across this young one on a lawn by the lodge in Cradle Mountain. Unlinke his older and wiser friends, this youngster didn't mind my attention and instead of curling into a bristling ball of spikes just went about his business as usual.
